Chiding the Child In Me

January 29th, 2010

A lot of my friends couldn’t wait to grow up. But I remember when I was younger I desperately tried to hold on to my childhood. I could almost feel it slipping away when I started high school, and there’s nothing you could do about it but sit and watch it run through your fingers. Even though I never liked Peter Pan, I couldn’t help but symphathize with him.

When I was 11 I asked my sister, who’s 6 years older than me, if she ever missed being a kid. She said no. She’s the type who lives everyday to the fullest, and apparently therefore has no regrets. I, on the other hand, am one of those drifters who like to stay in lalaland forever. And so I didn’t get her when she said she didn’t miss it. She must be lying! I thought to myself.

There comes a time in everyone’s lives when one remember all the good things about being a kid. The carefree soul that a lot of us seem to discard in place of responsibility. One also remembers the many freedoms denied to us simply because we’re children and hence are thought to be incapable of any form of intelligence.

For every victory there is a price to be paid.

Here’s to childhood.

Well said! I really relate to this post. I pretty much feel like a kid in an adults body most of the time! I think that’s why I’m so drawn to all things whimsical and fairytale-ish. Isn’t it ironic that, when we’re children and we have an idea that we think is quite mature, it doesn’t get taken seriously- them when we’re adults and we have a fun, childlike idea, it doesn’t get taken seriously! Gah!
Despite that however, i refuse to “grow up” ! i think it’s cool to stay in touch with your inner child, so GO YOU! :)
    What a lovely post!

Looking at pictures of childhood definitely takes me back to a carefree time. I always suspect that people who look forward to being adults don’t realize all the pressure and responsiblity…so far I don’t find adulthood better than being a child! But it isn’t terrible. :)
